Get involved

We accept applications on a rolling basis from students at Duke and UNC-Chapel Hill. A link to apply can be found here. Regardless of your skills, experience, or background, we’re happy to have you on the Jasūr team. If you are a student from another university looking to join the team, submit an inquiry here, and we will be in touch with you. If you have any questions about the application or working for Jasūr, you can always contact President Rebecca Eneyni (re77@duke.edu) and/or Editor-in-Chief Jasper Schutt (jasperms@live.unc.edu).

The editorial board works with selected journal authors to revise and publish their work. Throughout the editing process, our team supports authors in making edits, beginning with structural and content changes to fine-tuning syntax and citations. Journal editors are expected to commit an average of 3-4 hours per week to Jasur, during which responsibilities range from writing and editing calls for submission, reviewing submissions, editing pieces, and liaising with selected authors. MENA-related content knowledge is a plus, but not required–– we welcome students from all backgrounds.

Journal Editorial Board

Our design editors works with the editor-in-chief to create the layout for each issue of Jasūr, and are primarily responsible for using Adobe InDesign to assemble the journal each semester. We are seeking a design editor who has experience working with other publications (though this is by no means required), aesthetic sense, and experience working with InDesign. Interest in the various art scenes of the MENA region is a plus, as design editors play a large role in selecting our cover artist each semester and liaising with them.

Journal Design Editor

We’re currently in search of submission coordinators to work with both the journal and magazine teams to increase the volume and quality of our submissions. Though this role has room for individual direction, we’re specifically looking for someone who is comfortable conducting departmental outreach, communicating frequently with others (namely the EIC, magazine editor, and social media coordinator), and highly organized. At least some knowledge of Arabic or another Middle Eastern language is a huge plus.

Journal Submissions Coordinator

Led by Magazine Editor Manon Fuchs, the magazine team is responsible for the editing and design of Jasūr Magazine, our online platform for short-form analyses and creative work. We’re looking for staff editors, staff writers/columnists, as well as creatives who are interested in contributing to regularly and helping edit the magazine. These positions are open to students from all universities, not just Duke and UNC-Chapel Hill. If you’re interested, fill out our application or contact Manon Fuchs (manon.fuchs@duke.edu).

Magazine Staff

Jasūr regularly hosts events, which includes talks by scholars, activists, and artists. Past events have included Róisín Tapponi, founder of Habibi Collective and Shasha Movies, Cynthia Jreige, editor-in-chief of JDEED Magazine, as well as Myrium Amri, a brilliant scholar of materiality, value, and power in North African political economy. The events team conducts extensive outreach to prospective speakers. The most important part of events team members’ roles is having ideas about speakers to contact and following through.
